Health Insurance

Optional Coverage

While our four scales of coverage offer you flexibility by providing different levels of healthcare coverage, we've also developed optional benefits designed to help you further tailor your coverage to your needs.

Each of the following options is available as an add-on to your policy. Your financial security advisor can provide you with any additional information you may require.

Hospital Accommodation Benefit

The Hospital Accommodation Benefit provides up to $175 per day for up to 60 days each year to pay for the difference between the cost of a standard hospital ward room and the cost of semi-private accommodation.

Hospital Cash Benefit

No one plans on an extended stay in hospital, but if you were faced with that situation wouldn't it be nice to know you have some extra income to help offset some of the costs associated with your stay?

The Hospital Cash Benefit provides $50 per day for discretionary spending, starting on the fourth day you're in the hospital, for a maximum of 60 days. Use the money to cover costs that will make your stay as comfortable as possible, such as a television in your room or parking, cafeteria or child care expenses for your family. The choice is yours.

Accidental Death and Dismemberment

Sonata Health's Accidental Death & Dismemberment benefit provides you with added financial security should you be faced with sudden and tragic circumstances. With this benefit, you can select the level of coverage to suit your needs.

This coverage is available in units of $25,000, up to a maximum of $250,000 for the owner of the policy. The insurable spouse is covered for 50 per cent of the amount covered for the owner, and each child is covered for 10 per cent of the owner's amount.

Emergency Travel Medical Benefit

The Emergency Travel Medical Benefit provides coverage for medical services and supplies you need as a result of a medical emergency when you're travelling outside Canada. Coverage is provided during trips of 30 days or less, that begin and end in Canada. The maximum amount payable per covered trip is $1,000,000 Canadian.

It covers basic medical services and supplies related to emergency medical treatment, including:

An exception applies to medical conditions and/or symptoms that existed prior to any trip.

The Emergency Travel Medical Benefit also gives you access to Emergency Travel Assistance when travelling anywhere outside Canada, or in Canada when you're more than 500 kilometres from home. Service is also available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Assistance Coordinators can help you locate hospitals, clinics and physicians who can provide appropriate medical care, qualified legal assistance, local interpreters and appropriate services for replacing lost passports. Other emergency services include:
